Enter not in the path of the wicked. Turn from it and pass on.
I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.
Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]. (Romans 12:1-2)
Worldly music is a type of worldly path. Don’t listen to worldly music because it is a strategy that the enemy uses to open your mind (thoughts) to the worldly way. If you begin to listen to it, you’ll soon be singing it, and dancing to it. For example, the group, Earth Wind & Fire sings Rhythm & Blues (R&B) songs with positive messages, but their music does not glorify God. Before, accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, they were my favorite music group. During college, I spent $25 to see them in concert. However, now that I’m saved, I no longer listen to their music or see them in concerts.
I remember attending a church in Hyattsville, Maryland and the church promoted rap music. Although spiritual words may be put to the music it still caries a worldly vibe and effect, which creates tainted music. The tainted music looses its effectiveness in ministering purity and holiness to those who hear it because there is a worldly aspect or component in the music. When one incorporates Rap, R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, Country, and/or Blues music in a Christian church setting, you are patterning yourself and those that follow you, after worldly customs, which does not glorify and please God.
What You Do Does not Define Who You Are
If you are a Lawyer, Police Officer, Doctor, or Accountant, Cosmetologist, Security Officer, News Reporter, or Naturalist, your occupation does not define who you are, but who you are in Christ. As a believer in Jesus Christ (Word of God), you have become a new person pursuant to II Corinthians 5:17. Moreover, whether you have a Bachelors of Arts Degree, Bachelors of Science, or PhD., does not define you. It does not define your identity.
Once you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you become a child of God, and God becomes your Spiritual Father. Who God says you are defines your identity, not your friends, your co-workers, or your neighbors. You become an Ambassador (representative) for Jesus Christ. Therefore, you must become Christ-like. That is, you must desire and take steps necessary to become like Jesus Christ in character (mind, emotions, and actions) by reading, studying, and meditating on the Word of God. In doing, so you become who God says you are. This builds your self-esteem. But you must do the following:
I. Recognize Who You Are in Chris
Child of God and saved from eternal death in hell. (Romans 10:9; 8:16-17)
You are heir of God, like Jesus is an heir. As an heir, Jesus Christ received eternal life in God’s presence; grace and mercy; divine protection; and God’s glory. But just as Jesus Christ suffered on the cross, we will suffer through trials and tribulations, which may be in the form of false accusations, persecution, and grief). However, these trials and tribulations are designed to strengthen us by totally trusting, depending, and relying on God – the source of our strength. These trials/tribulations also help to build our confidence in God, knowing that He will surely deliver us.
“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their distress and troubles.” (Psalm 34:17)
“Out of my distress I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free and in a large place.” (Psalm 118:5)
- Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” (Psalm 139:14)
You are of value to God.
II. Walk in the Recognition of Who You Are in Christ
Walking in Victory
Approach Life issues with a Conquering Attitude
“Yet amid all these things, we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
“For whatever is born of God is victorious over the world; and this is the victory that conquers the world, even our faith.”
(I John 5:4-5)
“And they have overcome (conquered) him by means of the blood of the Lamb and by the utterance of their testimony, for they did not love and cling to life even when faced with death.” (Revelation 12:11)
Confess Words of Victory not words of Defeat
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it.” (Proverbs 18:21)
Examples of words of defeat are: Suppose someone asks you how are you doing today? You respond saying “I’m hanging in there.” These words are “words of defeat” because hanging implies that you are hanging onto life by a thread, and you can fall at any time. You have no foundation and you lack strength because you have no source of strength.
So, the next time someone asks how you are doing, respond with words of victory and power that line up with the Word of God. (For example, I am blessed and highly favored by God).
(Ephesians 1:4-5, Romans 8:29-30)
III. Depend on God’s Word for Encouragement
- God can deliver you out of all things
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore, will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness – trusts and relies n Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no never]. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16)
“Wait and hope for and expect the Lord, be brave and of good courage, and let your heart be s tout and enduring. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord.” (Psalms 27:14)
- Requirement of waiting
“But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power: they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to sun], they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.” (Isaiah 40:31)
- God is your source of strength
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“. . . the joy of the Lord is your strength”. (Nehemiah 8:10)
